Dear Students and Parents, This has certainly been three weeks no one had anticipated. First and foremost, I hope you and your families are well and safe. While we have been challenged as a school community in new ways, I am incredibly proud of our staff and students for all of their hard work transitioning to a distance learning model so quickly. I also am very grateful for our parents and caregivers who have been patient and supportive of our students and staff, all while managing additional stressors of family and work expectations from home.
In an effort to centralize information and communication, please visit Del Mar’s Distance Learning Website. We hope this makes navigating information and resources more manageable. We surveyed our students this week, to better understand how they are handling our distance learning model academically, socially and most importantly, emotionally. I will be working with our teachers and school psychologists after the break to determine where we can improve our model and practices, and determine how we can better support students individually and collectively. Students with missing assignments have been contacted at this point. Thank you all for stepping up and being on top of your work this week. As we move into Spring Break, I strongly urge you to put a pause on schoolwork. I believe everyone can use some time to focus on ourselves, our families and our friends. If you have not yet read the note from Dr. Gold, please take a few minutes to do so now and consider what this means for you and your family. In addition, it’s important to recognize that we are all going through this odd, confusing, strange time together. Take a moment to view this video with your child, and ask yourselves what you can take from this experience to help us “stay rooted in love.” With continued Shelter in Place declarations limiting what we can do during spring break, I’d encourage you all to consider some virtual field trips during your time together and away from school. Please consider these options, which are best viewed through a family device. We will pick up on academics upon our return and ensure that we re-engage in meaningful distance learning. Finally, I am incredibly proud to share the work of our students in Del Mar’s Guitar and Advanced Steel Pans classes, with leadership from our music teacher, Dr. Steinberg. These students produced an amazing performance: COVID-School Project (Fragile, by Sting) which combines a soundtrack with a slideshow of images of Del Mar and worldwide musicians, plus first responders. When the students first began learning Fragile in January, Dr. Steinberg showed them Sting's live performance of this piece on the evening of 9/11. Please share this with your family, but understand that we don't own the rights to Sting's performance and other global images, so it is for educational purposes only. I wish you all a wonderful, well-deserved and needed break. I am certain that as a community we will return from our breaks ready to end our school year in a positive and meaningful way. Take care, Brian M. Lynch Principal Comments are closed.
