Dear Parents and Students, As we navigate through the evolving landscape of distance learning, we are always looking to improve and refine our practice. The number one question we are seeking to answer is, “What is best for our Del Mar students?” With that, we are excited to bring you a new schedule that students will engage in beginning on Monday, April 20th. Beginning next week, students will start their morning at 8:00 a.m. as they did before, getting ready to learn. This first hour of the morning allows students the opportunity to get ready for their day by eating a healthy breakfast, setting up their workstation, preparing for their assignments by writing them in their planner, catching up on any incomplete or missing work, and emailing teachers or attending any teacher scheduled office hours.
Monday through Thursday, beginning at 9:00 a.m., students will now attend class online with their teacher. A second class period will begin at 9:45 a.m. each day. Students will be required to attend these two online classes and attendance will be taken. If a student is unable to attend, we ask that parents report absences to [email protected] and that students email their teachers to let them know in advance. We are looking forward to the opportunity for students to connect with one another again, as well as their teachers. In addition, each teacher will be providing at least two pre-recorded lessons each week, as well as holding at least one office hour. We are thrilled that students will now have the opportunity to connect with each teacher a minimum of four times per week, the same number of times when they were on our campus. Please note that while the required class meeting and the two pre-recorded lessons are pre-planned on the teacher’s part, they may look very different from class to class. Teachers will determine whether their class needs a preview of a lesson, a review, an explanation of a class project, or simply a social-emotional check-in. All are valuable in making connections with our students in determining what is best for their particular needs. Please note that office hours are not pre-planned on the teacher’s part and are simply a time for students to log into the conversation and receive clarification or assistance on their work. For more information and resources about Del Mar's Distance Learning, please check our Home Learning Resources Website. We understand that some students and parents are concerned about academic readiness for and/or placement in next year's classes (Spanish and Math, specifically). Please be assured that Del Mar faculty are fully prepared to support students in the transition in the fall and remediate any gaps in their learning. Students will still progress to their respective next levels in our language and math programs. Del Mar has an established record of preparing our students for success in high school, and we take pride in continuing that tradition, even through our distance learning format. We are in communication with Redwood High School and confident that we will support our 8th graders in transitioning to the rigor of high school curriculum and expectations. In closing, we want to let you know that we very much appreciate our Del Mar families. As parents ourselves, we know the juggle of supporting our children’s learning at home while working at the same time. Thank you for your words of encouragement, resources, and support. We are excited to bring this new schedule to our students and feel that it will provide the connection that we are looking for during this unprecedented time. With gratitude, Brian Lynch and Ann-Marie Skaggs Comments are closed.
